SSP Biochemistry, Indiana

Reviewer: Jacob Friedman

Stars out of 5: ☆☆☆☆☆

Location: Indiana University, Bloomington, IN

Cost: The program cost is ~$8,400, but this is subsidized from ~$10,000 thanks to alumni donors. My personal cost of attendance was between $2,000 and $4,000.

Personal Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed SSP Biochemistry—it was a rewardingly intense experience, where I put scientific theory into practice, collaborated with peers, and grew from making mistakes! Collaboration, as you’re conducting research in teams of 3, is vital throughout the whole program; this leads to some of the best friendships being made along way. Also, since you stay on a college campus and live in dorms, you get a feel for college life.

Anything else you want to add?

"#1. Everyone comes into SSP with different skill sets, but the program teaches you everything necessary for success.

#2. You unfortunately cannot submit your paper to STS, ISEF, NJSHS, etc. However, many alumni submit their paper as a research supplement to programs & colleges.

#3. Although most participants are juniors, there are a few sophomores that do SSP each year."

Recommendation?

Yes, SSP is one of the few programs where the cost is fully worth it (unlike many “cash cows”). With that said, if you’re worried about the cost of attendance, simply apply! SSP is generous with their financial aid and will meet all demonstrated need.
