Ochsner STAR Program

Reviewer: Anonymous

Stars out of 5: ☆☆☆☆☆

Location: Jefferson, Louisiana

Cost: FREE

Research Topics: STAR is a four-week summer program focusing primarily on scientific research, practical medicine, and leadership development. The program not only exposes its students to the various subsets in medicine but also to community building through multiple community service projects.

Personal Review:

The STAR program is both rigorous and fun. The program's size is relatively small, giving you a lot of one-on-one time with Mentors, Doctors, and the STAR staff. In the program, you get to visit most of Ochsner’s hospitals which exposes you to what goes on behind the scenes in the hospital as well as different medical professions. You will also get to shadow doctors in your field of interest at in of the program. As a part of the completion of the program, you are required to present a group research project at the end of the program, pass a financial literacy course, perform a mock clinical, and finally present a group community service project to Ochsner’s community outreach board.

Recommendation?

While the program requires strict attendance with only two days set aside for absences, I highly recommend the program for its educational value and the great people who staff it.
